Decathletes Learn How to Compost

This past Saturday, a group of DURA Decathletes volunteered at Red Hook’s Added Value Community Farms, and man did we have a blast!

We had worked with David Buckel under the Community Composting Initiative. David was very knowledgeable and helpful, and he kept the day flowing smoothly- it was clear that a fair amount of organization and planning went into putting the service day together!

Added Value Community Farm was started in 2000 as part of an initiative to give the community access to fresh and affordable produce, as well as address the issue of community teens’ lack of employment opportunities. The farm was initially less than an eighth of it’s size today. Since then, it has grown (pun not intended) to a full sized city block, complete with composting sites, many many square feet of growing plots, and its own solar panels!
